Shiekh got his big break in the shoe business at the early age of
17. While looking for ANY kind of employment in a mall, a shoe-store's HELP
WANTED sign caught his attention. The manager of the store was so impressed with
Shiekh that he immediately hired him and promoted him to the Chief Sanitation
Engineer position. To top it off, he even gave Shiekh a brand new mop (OK,
so maybe we exaggerate here and it was not quite so brand new) to sanitize the
bathroom. Within a few months, Shiekh was made the assistant
manager and then manager of the store. He moved up the corporate ladder
and moved to New York where he figured out that he was not doing what he really
wanted to do. He knew what customers really wanted and he wanted to put
that product into stores. He quit the corporate world and moved
back to the San Francisco Bay Area where he started working as a manager for a
one-store company. Within six months of taking this position, the sales
and profits doubled. Soon Shiekh was opening new stores in other Bay Area
malls and the rest is history. Shiekh takes pride in his ability to
know what the customer wants and getting that merchandise into his stores ahead
of the competition is one of his priorities. He believes in treating his
employees with the greatest respect, providing them with the best products and
tools to perform their jobs well, and letting them share in the profits and the
success of the Shiekh Shoes business. Shiekh is a hands-on manager
and his hands can still be seen on the mop handle occasionally (it is not so
brand new any more). His other interests include Badminton (in which he is
much better than his siblings) and he plays it regularly with world-rated
badminton players; and chess (in which he is much worse than his siblings) and
he gets beaten by others quite easily.
